Well, you dont read much comics, do you?

Two salesmen and one woman pushed ten mac-products my way, like preachers selling the ten commandments (and the Gospel of Jesus) – but I only needed this cheap one that is easy to write on.

It is possible to get great deals on the old Mac Air, the one without flash-memory.

  4. #22 They steal street signs!

LOL I instantly decided I love them. This would almost offset the studying the patterns on my clothing rather than listening to me talk, love of iPhones, which I hate (I love the Android OS) and the not knowing how to dress without consulting the Pantone book.

That’s right. I am so mischeivious, steal a street sign and I will forgive all the rest. 😉

    November 11, 2010
    • Thanks, WS.. I say, lets steal street signs together with a 4/C bottle of Bourbon in hand…. YEAH!!!

  29. Well I must point out that not every motive out there is true. Part from being a designer is that you’re a human. And you do socialize. And not in the way you pointed out.

    April 13, 2011
    • Welcome here, Laurentiu

LOL. . . I like the points, they are true, but I dont think graphic designers are intentional. and many people like graphic designers views in their life. because graphic designers can think different. They are not lay man.

but i loved the feedback from various people.
    good work 🙂

  77. Oh dear. Shall I have to rewrite my blogs? All along I thought everyone else enjoyed scrutinizing the menu design, the wall décor, even the napkin, original floor tiles and signage in restaurants. Now what’s wrong with asking people’s opinions about a design and following what you want anyway? And doesn’t anyone like Miro anymore? Hehehe.

    April 15, 2011
  78. 1. They are very weird people.
    5. They drink and eat all kinds of weird shit just because they like the packaging.
    11. They will fill your house with magazines and whatever is out there that has drawings.
    15. They idolize people who nobody knows and speak of them as if they were his colleagues.
    17. They ask your opinion about everything but they do whatever they want.
    19. They hate Comic Sans with the same passion they love Helvetica.
    25. Everything becomes something other than what it really is: cards as tickets, cards as …
    32. On vacation they will take you to countries that you do not know exist and have no beach.
    35. They can’t go to a restaurant without secretly critiquing the menu design.
    36. They listen to music you have never heard of.
    44. You will never understand their gifts.
    45. They see ordinary objects and laugh.
    47. They see CMYK and RGB like Neo sees the Matrix.

Depends on what kind of designer you’re talking about, some points are very true, but I would add…

-They are usually internally laughing about you because of your ignorance and terrible ideas.
-They get mad when they ask for a hi res picture and they get a picture pasted in word.
-They get mad when they ask for a vector logo and they get an animated gif.
-They know that a lot of clients can’t afford their services.
-They’re always surrounded by hot models.
-They get a lot of money from your pocket making stuff that takes 5 minutes or less.
-They can get in a single project, the money you will earn in a year.

    April 15, 2011

Wow! So many stereotypes. I could offer a retort, but I think your mind is made up and it would be a wasted effort. I hope over time you’ll come to more understanding of what you’ve written.

    April 26, 2011
    • Welcome Bill,
you speak about stereotypes as if it was a bad thing, but if you really think about aren´t we all, in a way or another? 🙂

Is not that my mind is “decided” on this, is that “I AM” this; l am a designer, l am weird as shit and most important, l am extremely proud of it – with all the good, the bad, the freaky that it contains.

So not only l am understanding of what l have written, but l embrace it fondly and proudly (and for what it seems, by the several thousands clicks in this post, quite a bunch are as proud as l am)

      April 27, 2011
      • Bill Elgato #

I see. Well, I am a designer as well and would appreciate not being labeled or fit into someone else’s box–something I see stereotypes used far more frequently for than for any useful understanding.

        April 28, 2011
        • Dear Billelgato: LIFE is full stereotypes, and everybody falls into one or another at some point.
This is a humorous way to see things -and since is personal, there is no offense intended- because l am able to make fun of myself. If you are not able to so the same, I will be more that happy to do it for you 😀

          April 29, 2011
  132. some of these are so on point! but wow, there are some many just ridiculous add ins to make it to 50. i i think some of these are very “trendy” designer queues. Not to be a super stickler because I know it’s all for fun but why not not be like – they have their own wireless mouse pouch, or they have a small pillow on the middle of their desk so when they need to make a dealdline they can still get a couple winks, or they want to barrow your fashions magazine strictly for the ads and explain how the font really made the apparel jump from the page, or they tell you to keep quiet while that new dos equis commercial (cinematography!) comes on, or they find new ways to create art out of everything they touch – like the straw wrapper… everyone’s straw wrapper at the table, or how about they have a glutinous fame addiction and hop out on highways to put their name up? or look at a book and think of which of the three design theories this book’s layout was formed from… or is it a combination of all three? or are they working in grids? what’s the algorithm for the grid? who what’s to have some shots and talk about the golden triangle? on the flip side, my interactions with people never are this coy even thought it is great to think of the possibilities

    April 28, 2011
    • well, there is a difference on being *creative*, not *ridiculous*, but again, this comes with the ability to make fun of oneself 😀
Very, very good points, BTW, nomph – you are right on the spot on the grid layout.. l see (nearly) everything on a 3-column grid!

            • I know! I am sorry I am such a disaster, mrscriblam 😦 It is not easy to tackle 4 languages daily and I even more get all confused when I type really fast with just two fingers (maybe if I typed with 4 or 5…)

              😀

PS: BTW, maybe these rules you could apply to your own crummy blog, because last I remember,

1.- the correct placement for adverbs is in between subject and predicate, not at the end of a sentence:

“hi my name is jacob breck and i write comics sometimes.”

2.- You don’t ”make a blog where i post comics”; you write a blog.

3.- You should use the same verbal tense “people kept telling me that i need to get a blog

4.- i as in “me” should capitalize (but that l get it, it is a statement)

5.- Maybe it is a good idea to let your readers catch a breath on a sentence that contains 47 words with more that one punctuation mark:

“one day i might make a blog where i whine about the harsh realities of having no really unique problems and the audacity to complain about the ones i have, but until then i hope people will love me for the entertainment value of my bad comics.”

We all know how to be Mr. Goodiepants, right?

  163. I’m a blogger and graphic designer but I don’t understand why do you say designers see museums as their second home. Than I’d rather spend my money on a nice gift than on a font, I don’t buy my outfits by the Pantone rules and i hate iPhones. Plus there are many rules out there that I don’t see myself in.

We are no stickers, my dear – therefore, we are all different from each other.
This post is meant on a subjective matter because it is *my* impression on this profession – that doesn’t mean we are *all* the same.

    • Ooohh… that’s what they call it? uhmm… ok, then! l would have never known, with those fancy words of yours. Either way, even from your picture l would have not known either if you are a boy or a girl (sorry, you don’t qualify as *man* or *woman*, so there is my dyslexic side… A side you match very well when l read your tweets or your answers on Formspring (f.e. “9 times out of 10 i use the seperate toilet ): urinals suck. actually they dont, that’s actually one of the reasons they’re so crap. those toilet cubicles with the hole in the wall DO suck. i like those.”)

WOW, darling Julian… For a moment, there was so much sarcasm spinning in my head l just had to restart my brain.

PS: either way, on the *serious* side… a bit disrespectful you are with downs syndrome’ people, unless… wait.. unless you are one of them us, and you meant this comment as a *positive* comment… Ahh.. there goes my dyslexia again…

First of all l must say congrats with having a great woman next to you (cool name btw), not because she is a designer, but because she makes you happy – quite difficult these days…

That said, gotta tell you that l am pretty sick and tired of having to excuse myself every time with this, as you say, shit: A graphic designer is NOT a copywriter!, so in a way, we can get away with this shit, because we TEAM with them…
Got it? Besides, what is the point to “peek and point” and miss all the fun?
And btw, it ain’t easy to juggle 4 languages (eyes, you read right, four) every single fucking day at the same time, buddy.

Funny read, contradicting statements, most of them are actually positive things, an obscene amount of unhealthy generalization… do I sense frustration over someone or over your own person as someone working in this industry as art director? Either way, very incorrect thought out arguments.

Most of them are true in my case… allthough I don’t like the emphasis on Apple products. Still many graphical designers like to use PC more than Mac. It’s an endless discussion which is best and I do not want to start it here… but I – and many of my collegues – personally prefer to use pc (mostly Lenovo TP’s or Dells) for graphical work.

This sounds more like the kind of annoying people who give graphic designers a bad reputation. Meaning: the kind of designers (mostly students) who think posters can save the world, but end up doing editing photos and kerning type their entire career hoping one day they can make money from their “artwork” and quit their design job like they originally planned before they wasted money on a design degree.

    January 5, 2012

Well then stop calling yourself a “designer” if you’re just a production artist with a design degree.

        January 8, 2012
        • Dear Jacob:

1.- gotta give you credit just for knowing the difference between a graphic artist and a graphic designer. l don’t have any degree* on any of those ones. l think. l got my degree from a Taiwanese school, but l don’t understand what is say, so l may have a degree in plumbing for what l know 😦

2.- This is supposed to be funny, Jacob, a way to laugh of ourselves. l love my work, and l love my job… and more, l love to find the less appealing things and turn them into fun. l would suggest to take a Sharpie out from your ass (or in, whatever works for you) and get some sense of humour.

18 Reasons to fall for graphic designers so quickly!

    1- They are unique
2- They never bring you a casual gift. It’s always have to be designed somehow by something they did
3- They are always hyper and active
4- You have never expectations from them. always having something new
    5- You’re never bored when they’re around

    • Dear allison,
i am not (concerned) – we do have copywriters to do magic with the grammar. l suck with that, l know, but is ok – they make sense to me, and that’s what counts
      🙂 🙂

    March 26, 2012
  260. This was a cute list (albeit full of poor grammar)… until you put the warning on it.

Newsflash: everything on the internet is public domain. I know, shocking! And while I know that the idea of making a “50 reasons…” list is novel, I would find it hard to believe that every reason on that list is 100% original.

So you might want to, you know, get off the high horse and fix some of the embarrassing grammar errors instead of making excuses for them. And it’s not nice to threaten people. 🙂

    March 31, 2012
    • Dear Dee, the “50 reasons…” list is as old as a list of 50 reasons…bla bla, bla, but those things are a result of observation of the dumb things me and other designers and friends do on our everyday life. Some are general, some very specific, mostly funny -at least to us. When you mess up one of your stitches, it will mess up your scarf, or sweater; you have to go back end fix it. We (some, at least) have always great copywriters to “clean” our concepts and ideas and all the grammar, for example.

This post has been around the world, Dee, and i could had fixed the grammar a loooong time ago. i didn’t, because being a little “scruffy” is part of who l am. l know, l accept myself with all my good an bad things -no excuses.

Imagine if somebody took a pic of that carpet that took you a million years to make, and made it their own, and took credit for it: Dee, you would be pissed also.

      BTW: the carpet is awesome.

      March 31, 2012
      • Sil, I fully understand you not wanting to have your work, or at least your compilation, passed off as somebody else’s. And wouldn’t blame you for putting a note on there saying “hey, feel free to share it, but I would appreciate it if you linked back/gave me credit”. Toooootally understand.

My point was more on the tone of your note… what was once a quirky quaint post that I liked enough to bookmark became a hostile threat akin to a territorial pissing contest. Combine that with a long stressful week and I was probably driven to comment on something I would have normally just shrugged and rolled my eyes at.

My guess is that upon seeing your original note, more people would be much less inclined to link back than if it was stated nicely. But I noticed you changed it. As they say, you trap more flies with honey than with vinegar.

And there is nothing wrong with being a bit scruffy, but then again working with editors has probably made me a bit of a stickler for grammar. Just hate doing another round of changes just because I misspelled a copy patch.

Anyway, it’s late, I’m dropping stitches and well I hate having imperfect sweaters. Thanks for the compliment, it’s actually a throw blanket. I’m pretty proud of it. 🙂

    So many things in common
    5. They drink and eat all kinds of weird shit just because they like the packaging.
    9. They fuck up all the tables with their cutters.1
    1. They will fill your house with magazines and whatever is out there that has drawings.14. They do not know how to add and subtract, they just understand letters.
    16. They take pictures almost daily and all are cut in weird shapes.
    17. They ask your opinion about everything but  they do whatever they want.
    20. They use iPhone for everything, because everyone has one.
    35. They can’t go to a restaurant without secretly critiquing the menu design.
    42. They have their own shops just for them and there are the most expensive in the city.
    43. They want to spend all the money in the Apple Store
Good thing I wanna be a graphic designer or this would be really weird o.o

But I don’t think this are reasons to not date us. Because although everything of this list is true, in the end we make good design. And good design can change the world and it influences her everyday. And really everything is design. I think this are all reasons to date us too.

    July 9, 2012
    • And l, as an AD, l won´t care… first because there is an irony on that, sand second because it makes the point that, once again, designers are NOT copywriters.

      July 10, 2012
  288. This refer to true graphic designer, not the aged commercial graphic designer.

    July 10, 2012
  289. They would rather analyze the Coke can redesign than talk to their friends while out for lunch.

They are often the kind of people that critique grammatical errors in blog posts (just saying).

    July 10, 2012
    • 😀 Some things are intentionally done to create controversy, and those who choose to see *only* that… well… 😀 again

      July 10, 2012
      • I thought it was a very clever and funny post that I could easily relate to. However, the grammar left a lot to be desired and I was not the only person to comment on it. There are a lot of journalists who are also interested in graphic design and they are sticklers for stuff that no one else notices, let alone the obvious.

        July 11, 2012
        • But l am NOT a journalist, NOT a copywriter, NOT a production artist.

Don’t you think there is an “intentionality” in all? Don´t you think that l could had easily corrected the grammar the very first moment and be done with it?

As a blogger, if wanting controversy and feedback -is not only what we write, but HOW we write it…

As they say, even negative advertising is good advertising.
          🙂

As a graphic designer, the majority of this was extremely insulting and even more of it wasn’t true (at least in my case). Ok, so you most likely dated a graphic designer and this is how things turned out in the long run, but you should understand that his occupation being a designer has little to do with what you listed, and its simply a true fact that this was HIS OWN personality. They seemed like a jerk who ignored you and revolved their life around their work. Not everyone is that way, so you shouldn’t label people based on their job but instead on who and how they are themselves.

    July 31, 2012
    • Dear John:
l am so sorry you feel this insulting -it was not meant to insult anybody, on the contrary, it was meant to amuse and show a quality many of *us*, designers, have to laugh at ourselves: humor.
Apparently, humor seems to have disappear somewhere up your ass.
l am a designer, and this is a proof that, despite our *world* can be stressful and too much sometimes, l can see the humorous side on all those *wacky* things.

Why do l bother explaining the same thing over and over?

    October 1, 2012
  318. Let me preface by saying that I’m a graphic designer:

I agree with exactly 29 of them.

Some aren’t necessarily ones about GRAPHIC designers though… like painting dolls and having paint on our hands, etc.

Also, some of the points are ones that are only primarily true for what I like to call the “doucheys” of the design world. These are the type of designers that points #15, #6, and #30 describe quite well.

For me, I’d say the ones I ESPECIALLY agree with are points #1, #19, #28, #29, and #46.

    Anywho…nice list! Fun read.

I’m a designer and a copy editor. That’s what makes me effective at my job. To say that designers and copywriters are two different things is not completely true. If the client is not hiring a copy editor, or you’re not part of a firm who has a copy editor, then it is primarily the designer’s job to make sure spelling, grammar, and punctuation are correct (after all, you’re the one being paid to do the work). Your excuse would be similar to a waiter saying “It’s not my fault you chose the wrong wine for your meal.” A waiter at a chain restaurant might say that. But, a seasoned waiter trained in wine pairings will know what to recommend to the diners because most diners will not know what they should pair with their food. Being a graphic designer who can effectively write copy and proof it is the difference between a designer who designs for fun and a designer who (as you say) has a studio for themselves and charges the most in the city. The last 2 projects I completed were take-over designs from inexperienced people charging $10-$20 per hour. They took over 1 month to not finish it, used MS Word and spelled everything wrong. I charged $50 per hour, finished them in an hour each, spelled everything right, and my clients get free (legit) stock photos.

This is really funny, I must say, however that I’m a designer., a veteran, and I don’t give a reats ass for apple, the apple store or ipods and iphones (although I have owned some). And Comic Sans has a place, now more than ever, because it irritates all the snobs 🙂 Thanks for this, it made my day.

    • Sweetie: I AM a designer… And l believe one of our TRADES should be self-irony and the ability to laugh at ourselves… Don´t you see that is all for fun?

      May 29, 2013
  357. M #

SO much wrong with this post. have you ever met more than one graphic designer? my hate for comic sans is far more extreme than love for Helvetica (it’s a pretty generic typeface). To the (OBVIOUSLY on so many levels) non-graphic designer author of this post: we’re not all stuck up art freaks who only shop at ikea. Get a clue.

    May 29, 2013
    • AL #

Unintelligent, BPD pseudo-designers who get offended by and cannot see the irony of this post should certainly pay a bourbon to all of us who love it. Go get treatment or get a job at Amy’s Baking Company.

      May 29, 2013
    • I am beginning to doubt about the level of intelligence of some designers, and even more, about some of their humour.

@AL: thanks, you just got it! pass me that bourbon, darling… there is way more stupidity here than l thought possible…

      May 29, 2013
      • AL #

@Silvia, I have been following replies to your post for a couple of years now. I am a copywriter. And I am single too, so if you’re ever down in London let’s paint the town red together. You may fall in love so you’re warned 😉

        May 29, 2013
      • M #

No need to call your readers unintelligent simply because they disagree. Learn how to take criticism. I showed this to my fellow graphic nerds and though we all expected it to be a funny post we could relate to (as we did for about 5 of the points listed) it ended up making us realize the author was not a graphic designer, but someone who thinks all graphic designers shop at Ikea and owning an iPhone because everyone has one.

        May 29, 2013
        • http://silviarodo.com/silviarodo.com/-_WORK_HISTORY_-.html

just for a reference, l have been doing this for a while, and not with “small” clients…

and BTW, the coolest designers are geeks, not nerds…

          May 29, 2013
        • amiel #

@M, clearly you deserved to be called unintelligent because you simply don’t know the meaning of a very simple word: irony. Google it with your fellow nerds and learn something from it. Maybe it will spill on your next designs. And BTW, I think you sound like an amateur graphic artist – with you amateurish love for Helvetica. There are far better fonts out there now, it’s not between Comic Sans and Helvetica anymore. Stupid is as stupid does. Get a clue.
